A two-time winner on dirt (1600m to 2500m) in Argentina before being imported to Dubai where he captured one 2000m race, also on dirt, last December. He then ran last in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup (3200m, turf) on Dubai World Cup night at his last start. Being the first of overseas runners to arrive on May 2, he has had more time to acclimatise. Has been working well. Form seems to be handier on All-Weather, but he can handle turf as well. Unproven quantity who faces a stiff task.

TRAINER:
-
PATRICK SHAW (SG)
Patrick Shaw, 58, started out as stable employee in 1988 before being upgraded with a professional trainer's licence by the Jockey Club of Southern Africa in 1990. Shaw was consistently among the Top-10 trainers in South Africa and counts his success with Teal in the 1995 Durban July as his biggest achievement before relocating to Singapore in 2001. His first horse of note was Palace Line, who won the International Group 3 Singapore Classic and the Singapore Guineas in 2002. Boosted by his close association with prominent South African owner Fred Crabbia, Shaw has prepared useful horses like Blizz Bless, Que Expresion and War Horn, but none comes close to Singapore’s champion sprinter Rocket Man. A winner of 20 races from 27 starts, Rocket Man rewrote Singapore history in 2011 when he became the first Singapore-trained horse to win an International Group 1 race, landing the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan in 2011. Two months later, he broke through for his first KrisFlyer win at his third attempt. That year also saw Shaw clinch his first trainer’s premiership title after preparing 78 winners. He made it back-to-back KrisFlyer triumphs when Ato saluted in 2012.The South African handler will be the busiest trainer at the Internationals this year, saddling a big team of five runners, including four in the SIA Cup.

JOCKEY:
-
BAREND VORSTER (SA)
Barend Vorster, 38, has been riding since 1993 and has booted home more than 1,000 winners. The lightweight South African jockey made his Singapore debut in October 2003, starting his love affair with the Republic Island on a two-day permit. He enjoyed the racing at Kranji so much he decided to return full-time in 2004, and has not looked back since, having called Singapore home since. That year turned out to be a stellar year for Vorster when he won the coveted Singapore jockey’s premiership in commanding style. Riding mainly for fellow South African trainer Patrick Shaw, Vorster has claimed his fair share of big races, including the Group 1 Lion City Cup with Why Be in 2007 and Rocket Man in 2011, but nothing has topped his success in the 2012 KrisFlyer with the Shaw-trained Ato, with whom he also annexed the Group 1 Patron’s Bowl one month later.
