KRISFLYER INTERNATIONAL SPRINT’S RUNNER & TEAM

  • EMPEROR MAX
  • [Barrier No: 1]
  • Former Melbourne bread-and-butter sort who has improved by leaps and bounds in Singapore. Reeled off five-in-a-row at first five starts and was the first local across the line when second to Lucky Nine in last year’s KrisFlyer. Scored two 1400m wins at Group 2 and 3 level, but then bled after one race in November. Resumed with a huge run when third first-up in Lion City Cup (1200m). Prefers a good track. Bombproof most of the time. Will be thereabouts when whips are cracking.

Stephen Gray
  • TRAINER:
  • STEPHEN GRAY (SG)
After many years assisting his father-trainer Kevin in New Zealand, Stephen Gray, 50, has become a successful trainer in his own right since he relocated to Singapore in 2000. Gray has trained around 500 winners at Kranji including success at Group level with Lim's Prestige (Group 1 Emirates Singapore Derby), Lim's Reward (Group 1 Patrons’ Bowl), Kelantan (Group 2 third Leg of the Three-Year-old Challenge), St Kentigern (Group 3 Kranji Sprint) and the last two Legs of the Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge with Given Vision in 2009. But the one horse who has arguably plotted the most exciting career path for him at Kranji is Emperor Max, a decent sprinter in Australia, but who has improved by leaps and bounds under Gray’s care in Singapore to propel himself onto the international stage last May with a cracking second to Lucky Nine in the KrisFlyer. The Holy Roman Emperor five-year-old will attempt to go one better this year.
Corey Brown
  • JOCKEY:
  • COREY BROWN (AUS)
Corey Brown, 38, began riding in country New South Wales before moving to Sydney in 1992. Since landing his first Group 1 success in 1993 aboard Camino Rose in the Coolmore Classic, he has gone on to notch a slew of them, with his hat-trick of Group 1 wins on Epsom day 2003 the most memorable – Clangalang (Epsom Handicap), Niello (Spring Champion Stakes) and Unearthly (Flight Stakes). He ventured to Hong Kong in 1999 for two seasons and upon return, he teamed up with John Hawkes in Sydney, winning the 2001/02 jockey’s premiership. He joined the Lee Freedman stable in Melbourne in early 2007 before returning to Sydney following the Melbourne Spring Carnival that year. A noted big-race rider, Brown can count his 2009 Melbourne Cup victory aboard Shocking as his career highlight to date. Brown has been riding in Singapore since 2013, always finishing in the Top 5. Last year, he gained his highest acclaim when he guided his current SIA Cup mount, Quechua, to victory in the Group 1 Longines Singapore Gold Cup.
