KRISFLYER INTERNATIONAL SPRINT’S RUNNER & TEAM

KIWI KARMA

Only three-year-old in the field and only filly. Not much of her but her bulldog qualities have seen her fight off her peers as a two-year-old and later on as a three-year-old. Never worse than second, including six wins in 11 starts until a close fourth at her last start, which was in open company in the Group 1 Lion City Cup, probably her best run to-date. Races on the speed and will be advantaged by a low draw. Though KrisFlyer had not been her target from the outset, she fully deserves her place in the barriers. Place chance.

TRAINER:
-
MICHAEL CLEMENTS (SG)
Michael Clements, 49, trained for five years in Zimbabwe, commencing in 1993. He was crowned champion trainer there in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons, and was runner-up during the 1994/95 and 1997/98 seasons. He trained over 260 winners there and close to 400 winners at Kranji including 54 feature race winners (one Group 2, 16 Group 3's, 15 Listed and 22 Stakes races), and a Triple Crown winner. He received his MRA licence in 1998 and has enjoyed his fair share of success since. He first saddled Jazz Malone to win the Singapore Derby Trial in 2000 and Fairy Tale to win the Stewards’ Cup in 2004. He then saddled Revolte to win the 2008 Stewards’ Cup and the 2009 Singapore Guineas, Dontellthewife to win the 2011 JBBA Moonbeam Vase and Totality to win the 2013 Three Rings Trophy. Smart filly Kiwi Karma gave him more accolades in the inaugural CECF Singapore Prestige Classic and the Dester Singapore Three-Year-Old Sprint in 2015 and will now be his first International runner in the KrisFlyer.

JOCKEY:
-
MANOEL NUNES (BRA)
Manoel Nunes, 39, commenced his apprenticeship in 1995 and was granted a jockey’s licence in 1996. Apart from riding in his home of Brazil, he has also ridden in Argentina, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Dubai, but is probably better remembered for his success in Macau. He went to the former Portuguese enclave in 2002 and won the Macau Jockey’s Championships in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 racing seasons before heading to Hong Kong for the next two years. The 2008/2009 racing season saw him return to Macau having an immediate impact with three straight Jockey’s Championship and during the 2010/11 season, he notched his 700th Macau winner. He has scored 15 Group 1 wins out of his 38 Group successes. The last two years have seen Nunes make Singapore his home. At his very first season in 2013, he finished runner-up to fellow countryman Joao Moreira and with the latter gone to Hong Kong in October 2013, Nunes landed his first Singapore champion jockey title in 2014. That same year, he claimed a raft of feature races, none more prestigious than the Group 1 Emirates Singapore Derby with Spalato. He is the current runaway leader on the Singapore jockey’s premiership.
